Paperback ARC Review – Paranormal Romance – Mystery – Small Town Secrets – Humor – Suspicious Boyfriend Energy
There’s Something Fishy About My Boyfriend by Gloria Duke
This book was chaotic, weirdly charming, and honestly way more fun than I expected going in. It fully embraces its absurdity while still giving you enough mystery and romance to stay invested the entire time. I went into this expecting a quirky paranormal romcom, but it ended up having a lot more emotional depth and tension underneath the humor than I anticipated.
⭐ Star Rating: 3.75 ⭐
This book felt like a bizarre blend of cozy paranormal mystery, awkward romance, conspiracy energy, and girl your boyfriend is definitely hiding something vibes. The atmosphere constantly balances humor with this underlying sense that something is deeply off, which made the story surprisingly addictive.
It made me: Appreciate books that fully commit to being strange while still keeping the emotional relationships believable and engaging.
Did I care about the characters? Honestly yes.
The main character’s constant suspicion and internal spiraling felt both hilarious and relatable at times. Watching her try to piece together what was happening while also navigating her feelings created a really fun balance between comedy and tension.
The boyfriend himself was frustrating in that very intentional “you are absolutely hiding something from me” way that keeps you reading because you NEED answers. Every interaction somehow managed to feel both suspicious and weirdly sweet.
The side characters added a lot of personality to the story and helped keep the pacing feeling light even once the mystery elements started escalating.
Tropes included: paranormal romance, suspicious boyfriend, hidden secrets, quirky humor, small-town weirdness, mystery investigation vibes, supernatural chaos, emotional miscommunication, awkward romance, conspiracy energy, cozy paranormal atmosphere.
These tropes definitely delivered. The humor and mystery carried the story for me, but the relationship dynamics kept me emotionally invested even during the more chaotic moments.
Pacing? Pretty fast overall. This is the kind of book that’s easy to binge because every chapter gives you another reason to question what’s actually going on.
This book made me feel: entertained, suspicious of literally everyone, emotionally invested, and oddly protective over the main character’s sanity.
This book WILL make you keep reading because you’ll constantly be thinking: Okay but WHAT is actually wrong with this man?
Not for readers who want super serious paranormal romance or heavy worldbuilding. This leans much more into quirky mystery, humor, relationship chaos, and supernatural weirdness.
All in all, a fun, strange, addictive read that completely commits to its chaotic premise.
